Boston (DbTechNo) - A settlement has been reached between Microsoft and the European Commission when it comes to internet browsers available to users.
Microsoft had been in breach of EU antitrust rules by bundling their Internet Explorer web browser with their dominant Windows operating system, thus effectively not giving consumers a choice of what browser they used.
Opera was the Norwegian browser maker that triggered the backlash against Microsoft, due to what they believe was unfair practice.
The commission has levied as much as 2.44 billion against Microsoft in fines, but now a 5-year agreement has been decided upon.
“Millions of European consumers will benefit from this decision by having a free choice about which web browser they use,” Competition Commissioner Neelie Kroes said in a statement.
Microsoft is already the most used browser on the internet, used by more than 56% of internet users, including myself.
